Stories That Connect Us

Entangled Graphic 2
Tales From The Urban Mission-Field Volume Eighteen

 Dear Tami,

Tami Executive PhotoHello, Family!  I am pleased to bring you the seventeenth edition of Stories That Connect Us, a collection of real tales from BOSS The Movement's urban mission field.  As BOSS The Movement and Vertical Leap have come to be known as the HOW-TO ministry, this series will share with you stories that demonstrate HOW God is working in our lives on a daily basis -- and HOW He is using each one of us to powerfully touch the lives of others.  Please enjoy today's submission of Stories That Connect Us -- and, maybe, begin to look at life's daily occurrences differently.  What might God be showing you today? Or, who might He be connecting you to?  And for what purpose?  For, truly, we are ENTANGLED, with Him and with each other...(John 17:18).

Blessings,
Tami Outterbridge

GMWA 2008 Sample PhotoA Little Island Appeal
Written by Tami L. Outterbridge

This note comes to you, again, from the island of Jamaica, where we are here for the 3rd Caribbean area Vertical Leap Seminar.  This time, we are in Jamaica's largest city, and its capital -- Kingston!  Gone are the lazy, relaxed waves of Ocho Rios, the small fishing town where the other two Vertical Leap events took place earlier this year...Here, in Kingston, it is more inland.  It is a more urban-island feel.

GMWA 2008 Sample PhotoActing on their God-given passion to transform the hearts of a generation of Jamaican youth, our regional hosts, Fred and Regna McClurkin, have done it again!  Scheduled to be here this weekend are an expected 150 people: educators, pastors and leaders -- all who want to transform a generation of youth through the anointing of the BOSS The Movement principles. (Read more about Al & Hattie Hollingsworth's BOSS The Movement curriculum at www.bossthemovement.com.)

But, as we have asked you to do before...may we make a little island appeal?  We would ask that you please pray for us and for the work that is being done here.  Because, like we have said before, here there is a great warfare.   There is a battle that is being waged in spirit and in flesh for the hearts and minds of the youth.  And there are many reasons why, but maybe, just maybe, this next thing is one of them.

With that said, let me tell you a bit about the history of Kingston.   First, it sits on the site of a historic, old city...a sunken city!  A sunken city that was once one of richest -- and at the same time -- most decadent cities in history.  It was called Port Royal -- and being a land of infamous swashbucklers and buccaneers -- it was a REAL and TRUE "pirates of the Caribbean!"

Researcher Donny L. Hamilton, of the Port Royal Project, said this about the old city...

"Once known as the 'Wickedest City on Earth,' Port Royal on the island of Jamaica was one of the largest towns in the English colonies during the late 17th century.  It was a haven for privateers and pirates, such as the famed Sir Henry Morgan, due to its excellent geographic location in the middle of the Caribbean.

After 1670, the importance of Port Royal and Jamaica to England was increasingly due to trade in slaves, sugar, and raw materials.  It soon became the mercantile center of the Caribbean area, with vast amounts of goods flowing in and out of the port through an expansive trade network.

Unfortunately, the glory of Port Royal was short-lived.  On the morning of June 7th, 1692, a massive earthquake hit Jamaica.  The tremors rocked the sandy peninsula on which the town was built, causing buildings to slide and disappear beneath the sea.  An estimated 2000 Port Royalists were killed immediately in the disaster.  Many more perished from injuries and disease in the following days."

Today, built up and over the grand, wicked history of Port Royal, Kingston bears the marks of the sunken old city that lies beneath it.  Like its predecessor, Kingston is a dichotomy of wealth and poverty; a stark contrast in good vs. evil.  For example, here is just one thing, Kingston is now known as the "murder capital of the world."

"We are known around the world for having more churches per square mile; but we have more bloodshed than any other area in the world. Bloodshed has become the norm here,"  says Regna.

"My heart in doing all of this is to truly see the youth of Jamaica get the understanding of WHO Jesus Christ really is and NOT religion!" she says.

"When you talk to a Jamaican young person here you often hear them say: 'I do not want to get baptized because I do not want to backslide.' So the fallacy is that they wait forever to come to Jesus Christ, because they don't want to backslide!  So, they have not realized the GRACE of GOD and they have not taken advantage of it.  For the young people here, everything is about the judgement of God!"

"BOSS is what our NATION needs!  BOSS is the answer.  God truly answered our prayers with BOSS.  Even the things that we didn't ask for, He surpassed it with the most amazing gift in bringing BOSS here to us.  Fred and I are so grateful!"

"My seed is not just my and Fred's two daughters, Briana and Mikaela.  My seed is also the youth of this nation.  My seed is also the youth of the world."  She says, "My seed, our seed is global."

So, with all of that said, family, may we make another little island appeal?  It is simply this:  If you care to, please join us this weekend for our LIVE STREAM from Kingston, Jamaica!    Watch with us, Saturday, July 11, from 9am to 9pm Central Standard Time; and Sunday, July 12, 1 pm to 9 pm Central Standard Time.  Simply go to www.bossjamaica.com.  JOIN US FOR THE ONGOING TRANSFORMATION OF A NATION!!
